Around 21st century, the operation pattern and activities of commercial banks all over the world including China went through a great change. As it play more important roles than before in commercial bank operations, the retail banking gained more and more attentions from various facets. With the full opening up of Chinese financial markets pushed by Chinese government, each domestic commercial bank went for reform and transformation positively. The strategic transformation of commercial bank is the tool for acquiring competition strength, changing the former strategy and urging the substantial change in commercial bank management and operation. In this background, our commercial banks have problems such as low marketing level and growth potential in retail banking. As a result, the researches on the development of retail banking and summarizing the experiences and lessons from the development process will be meaningful for retail banking transformation issue of China's commercial banks.Based on above, this dissertation first introduces the research background and goal briefly. In the second section, we cover some fundamentals about retail banking of commercial banks. In the third section, we introduce the development of retail banking of foreign and domestic commercial banks. In the next section, this dissertation describes the status quo of retail banking development in China. By comparing with that of foreign commercial banks, we reveal several problems in the retail banking development of our commercial banks and necessity of transformation. In the last section, based on the summaries of the accomplishments and defects of our commercial banks and the related experiences from developed countries, we forward some detailed policy suggestions. We hope that such researches can make sense for retail banking development in China.
