In the literature, employee commitment is affected by transformational /transactional leadership. This text inquiry into the relationship between leadership styles and organization commitment by substantial evidence analysis. Otherwise, the current paper introduces a moderating variable, emotional intelligence (EI) into the investigation of leadership effectiveness. Leaders' and subordinates' emotional intelligence are argued to strengthen or weaken the impacts of certain leadership styles on organizational commitment.Based on the data analyses of 241 leader-follower dyads in 6 enterprises, we find that high EI of leaders enhance the impacts of both transactional and transformational leadership styles on subordinates' organizational commitment. Furthermore, subordinates' high EI is useful for them to understand the nature of transactional leadership and to respond with a certain level of affective commitment accordingly. Integrating the leadership practices in Chinese enterprises, we offer discussion regarding implications of the above research findings.
