Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Railway's Original name was Suhangyong Railway,that is from Suzhou to Hangzhou and then to Ningbo. The process of this private-owned route changing to be the state-owned reflected the tcomplex relations of the late Qing Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, the state power of china gradually became weakness. Relying on the military and political strength, the United Kingdom snatched China's railway and forced the Qing Dynasty to sign the "suzhou-Hangzhou-Ningbo loan contract".In order to preserve interests,the people of Jiangsu and Zhejiang province decided to run the railway by themselves and this plan got the support of the Qing Government. By the two provinces'gentlemen and businessmen's advocation and promotion, the vast number of civilians actively bought the stock of this railway.They collected more than 1,330 million yuan ,constructed the railway of 288, 91 kms long. They took practical action to abolish the treaty. Though the funds and construction of this railway made great success, the United Kingdom insisted on the contract and exerted strong diplomatic pressure on the Qing government. The late Qing dynasty was unable to vindicate its authority ,and had to admit the validity of the contract and force the two provinces to accept the contract. This step led to the two provinces'refusal campaign which against the British and the Qing government. Because of the funs lacking , in the Railway Nationalization Campaign of the Republic of China,this railway was nationalized in the end.
