In recent years, tourism has boomed to be one of the liveliest industries in world economy, which attracts attentions from people both at home and abroad. However, the history of tourism hasn't been fully researched throughout the historical circle. This paper chooses Kenya in East Africa as the research object as it enjoys a better development of tourism, to make a preliminary exploration about the history of tourism over 40 years. It regards the travel activity and travel phenomenon as a whole to analyze the development course of tourism from the historical perspective, and further summarize the reasons for the success of tourism in Kenya, and also serves as reference for tourism in other developing countries.This paper is divided into three parts to discuss the development history of tourism in Kenya. Part I is mainly to analyze the background of tourism in Kenya through the world tourism, Africa tourism and the development conditions for agriculture, industry. Part II is to classify the development course of tourism in Kenya into 4 periods, namely, preliminary development period, booming period, adjustment period and further adjustment in revival with a summary of characteristics of each period respectively. Part III is to discuss the great influences of tourism on economic development in Kenya including the increases of foreign exchange, the balance of foreign trade, more employment opportunities, reduction of poverty and reconstruction of different industries, etc. Finally, this paper sums up the inevitability of the development of tourism and illustrates the experience of success for its development in Kenya.
