Study Of International Competitiveness Of The Development Of Modern Service Industry In Beijing

Modern service industry is not only an important symbol of measuring the modernization level of a country or region, but also a key factor which influences a city's competitive capacity. In the year 2006, the total output value of whole Beijing municipality was 772,030,000,000 RMB, among which the increment achieved in tertiary industry (i.e. service industry) was 540,510,000,000 RMB and its proportion in the total economic value of Beijing has reached 70%; the increment achieved in modern service industry was 3,637, 400, 000, 000RMB, with its proportion in the total economic value of Beijing Municipality and the tertiary industry reaching 47.1% and 67.3% respectively. As the statistics shows, the modern service industry has been the pillar industry and predominant strength for the development of national economy of Beijing. However, due to all kinds of problems existing in modern service industry of Beijing, its development is still greatly left behind compared with that in other well-known international cities. Therefore, how to improve its capacity in international competition and bridge the gap comes to be an important issue that has to be faced with and solved by Beijing in the future.The main theoretical basis of the thesis is competition edge theory, which is considered as the most influential theory within the research of industry's competitive capacity. At the beginning of the thesis, we introduce the definition of relevant basic concepts, elaborate the directive function that the competition advantage theory has for the study of the international competitive capacity of modern service industry and specify the determinants which exert influence on the international competitive capacity of modern service industry. On the basis of this framework, we construct the evaluation index system for the study of international competitive capacity of modern service industry, thus providing further scientific analytic method for the empirical studies on this aspect.Under the guidance of the theoretical framework above, we give a brief introduction of the development situation and basic characteristics of modern service industry of Beijing, which mainly focuses on the situation of its international competitive capacity. On the basis of this, the following conclusion is reached: the international competitive capacity of modern service industry of Beijing is still weak, and reasons leading to this situation are found out.The environment at home and abroad the modern service industry is confronted after China joined in the WTO. With reference to The Development Program of Service Industry During "the Eleventh Five-Year" Program of Beijing Municipality formulated by the Development and Reform Committee of Beijing Municipality and other research achievement, the thesis intends to elaborate the measures to improve the international competitive capacity of the modern service industry of Beijing from such perspectives as its development strategies, macro-management, the relevant legal policies as well as enterprise organization.The methodology adopted in this thesis is quantitative analysis and comparative analysis.
