The rapid development of science and technology and the great enhance of social productivity make mankind create unprecedented material wealth, greatly improve people's purchasing power and change the retailing scale and way. The continuous appearance of super market leads to the new round of innovation of sales way. From the 1950s till now, super market has gradually become the mainstream of many national retail formats through decades of development. In the 1980s, China's first super market opened in the haidian district of Beijing, which marks the birth of the super market. Since then, super market, as a kind of brand-new business operational manner and forms, developed rapidly in China. After 20 years of wind and rain, supermarket has become the main business model of China's commodity retail. In the 1990s, the average annual rate of China's supermarket chain reached 70 percent and always maintained a fast growth rate, which made lianhua and depiction, century hualian, trust-mart, vanguard's initial scale and a number of famous brand emerge. In the beginning of 21st century, Large foreign supermarket chain also accelerated the entry into China market. The rapid development of Super market in China sparked widespread attention and geographical circles and become one of the hot issues which scholars are studing. The present situation and spatial distribution of super market development is related not only to the motivation and modes but also related to urban economic and urban commercial healthy and orderly development.This paper, taking regional economic development as the background of in the field survey and being on the basis of a large number of data through investigation, applys the principle and method of geographic information system (GIS), draws support from the strong spatial analysis function of ArcGIS and uses the fold for analysis and buffer analysis method of xi'an to study the spatial distribution of large supermarkets in xi'an which is the northwest trade center. Thus we can find that there are some shortcomings in spatial distribution in the process of its rapid development of supermarket. At the same time, rational suggestions have been put forward in order to offer reference and guidance for the future development of xi'an retail industry.In the process of writing this paper, the author has adopted a large number of field investigation and measurement data and refered to the relevant literature material, analyzing and studing the following problems systematically:(1) using location theory, center ground theory and cluster relevance theory, drawing lessons from the research achievements of experts who study domestic and international supermarket and combining the characteristics of xi'an retail development itself affecting large supermarket, the author determined the influence factors of spatial distribution of large supermarkets including regional environmental factors,the level of economic development, population factors, traffic condition and urban infrastructure. The affecting mechanism of various factors also has been in-depth analysis and discussion and the connection between them has been found.(2) This parer uses the buffer analysis module of ArcGIS spatial analysis function to analyze the business service radius of the supermarket in xi'an city,coming to conclusion that when supermarket service radius is set as the 2000m national standards, supermarket business circle appears seriously coincidence and even appears five other brand large supermarkets in the business circle; when supermarket service radius is reduced to 500m, except for a few supermarkets appear part of coincidence of the circle, the majority of supermarket business circle don't appear coincidence. the author finally determines that the supermarket service radius of xi'an should be set as 500mb which is far less than the standards prescribed by the state.Thus we can make sure that the service radius of large supermarkets in xi'an are too small, in addition, the supermarket is too centralized in downtown and there exists shortcomings in spatial distribution.(3) This paper uses geography related principles and analyzes a series of questions produced by unreasonable space layout of large supermarkets in xi'an and small service radius, including the malignant competition caused by each merchants' fierce robing business circle; the urban transportation risks derivatived by shopping bus and suburban shopper inconvenience and increased difficulties of government management. Aimed at the problems, the author puts forward a series of measures, such as encouraging businesses to adjust business strategy, vigorously exploiting shopping market, rational planning suburban shopping bus, strengthening the control power of government for the location of the large supermarkets etc. The author hope all these suggestions can provide the reference for the development of large-scale supermarket and xi'an city planning.
