Multimedia satellite communication network aims at integrating Pacial and ground broadband communications to form an integrated communication network. Multimedia satellite communication network adopts the technology of onboard processing and onboard switching so as to shifting communicating and routing functions from ground to satellite. In this way, the capacity of the satellite system is largely broadened, and multi business needs from users are satisfied. Multimedia satellite communication system supports multi business types, but different business types need reasonable transmission mode according to different features of different business types. With the wide business need, such as video-on-demand, video conferencing, etc based on the traditional unicast transmission mode, multicast transmission mode has also been more and more attention.This paper focuses on the research of the multicast transmission communication model in the multimedia satellite communication system. A multicast program based on the multimedia satellite communication system is designed. Meanwhile the existing ground-based IP multicast and the satellite ATM technology are analysed and researchded. The multicast program based on multimedia satellite communication is proposed by researching and integrating with the existing IP multicast technology and the satellite ATM technology, including the designs of multicast communication interface based on the program, multicast address resolution primitive and multicast address resolution server.Meanwhile the paper implements a video chat system based on the IP multicast program in the simulation environment to verify the feasibility of the multicast program, including the client, the gateway station and multicast address resolution server. The multicast data in the program is transmitted only one hop from serving endpoint to user endpoint by the onboard processing capability of the multimedia communication satellite so as to avoid complicated routing mechanism and routing bottleneck and reduce the delay of destination address processing, because the satellite network has the advantages of high bandwidth and broadcast feature among wide range geographic regions. The simulation result shows that the IP multicast program has unique advantage that more multicast data is easily provided among wide regions than ground multicast network.
