With the rapid development of domestic economy, GPS Navigation System has been widely used and providing convenience to the users. The GPS Navigation System is consisted of navigation, localization, map query and spatial data management and it is an intergrated software solution. The system also can be assembled or cut by the need. Development of the Navigation System doesn't only solve the problem of software autonomy and security, which is based on the high-performance ARM processor and the open-source Linux operating system, but also has tremendous values and potentials in the market.But there are many bottleneck problems in devloping navigation system, such as data organization, access and real-time update, information interaction and accurate location of GPS. Aming at these problems, the thesis proposed development program of hand-held GPS navigation system based on ARM-Linux, primary studied four parts as fallows:1. The navigation system architecture. According to the requirement of this system, the hardware and software of system architecture were shown. And then, the components of hardware and software system were introduced with the aiming at the implement of navigation system goal;2. Organization of the spatial topological data. This was an important part to research on the spatial data organization. Because of the limitation of embedded system's storage conditions and running speed requirements of embedded system, the data organization was divided into three steps: Step 1, Converting the data format; Step 2, Compressing the data; Step 3, Using the mutifile and data-block method to store spatial data, and then implementing data topologize.3. The map's coordinate transformation and implementation. It studied on the coordinate transformation that the spatial data was projected onto the plane transformation and several transforming methods on the plane coordinate, and then it also introduced the algorithms of map displaying quickly and the basic functions operating on the embedded systems;4. The GPS signal receiving and positioning. It researched on how to receive the GPS signals and locate accurately on the embedded electronic map.Finally, all research was carried out by the experiment that on the PC and the testing board, and the experimental results and experimental performance parameters are shown. In the end, the paper summarized the work of system design and figured out the deficiencies and improvements and the future development direction.
