Directionality measurement of texture has become an active research field in recent years and is playing an important role in area of pattern recognition, image retrieval, computer vision, image processing and computer graphics, and it is leading a great prospect of application. Traditional research technique of texture directionality (including the intrinsic directionality of texture and illuminate direction) are restricted in 2D surface textures, and few research has been done on 3D surface textures. In fact, real-world textures normally comprise rough surface geometry. Research on 3D surface texture contains appearance representation under different illumination and view conditions, data collection, analysis synthesis and visualization.Directionality of 3D surface textures is measured by special methods, and the measured results are analyzed and evaluated. This thesis first introduces the texture and current situation of texture directionality research. Then the background knowledge and relevant research methods are provided, and the 3D surface texture directionality research is further discussed. In view of the linearity and independent property of Mojette Transform, we use it to make feature extraction and then introduce it into the research of 3D surface texture directionality by utilizing some methods of 2D surface texture directionality research for reference. According to the current various methods on texture classification, a novel work that is based on Mojette transform and Gabor wavelet transform is proposed. Through comparing data between the testing set and training set, a different similarity measurement of classification is used. The experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach. For the different texture appearances under different illumination directions, Mojette transform and Gabor wavelet transform are used for extracting features, and detecting the illumination of 3D surface texture by classifying. Finally, the research into 3D surface texture direction by using Mojette transform is concluded, and the innovation, deficiency of the research and the prospect of future work are summarized.
