For the demands of dam construction monitoring, as data-collection and location based service, it is really needed to find a platform with good mobility, communication capabilities and location functions. PDA becomes a perfect device accompanied by the development of its communication capabilities and computing power.This paper designs and implements a construction monitoring system based on PDA, reference to the original PDA data collection module, which is used for dam monitoring and service. The development platform is Windows Mobile, which decreases the development complexity. It uses GPRS for wireless communication between clients and servers and GPS to realize location functions in dam area. The three layer C/S structure makes for better extensibility and integration. This paper describes the detailed implementation of dam construction monitoring platform, these contents can be subdivided into data collection and remote transmission. We use a variety of design pattern to make sure the collection and transfer process is designed to be customized modules, and make the data collection system has good scalability and maintainability through the combination of iterator-composite pattern and Windows Mobile interface. Transmission in the network, through the abstract factory pattern and the MFC serialization framework we achieve good scalability with the network structure.In order to ensure the reliability and stability of the system, many tests for functions and performance are carried out. The contents of these tests contain data-collection, GPRS data transmission, the update process of data collection configuration file, server concurrent pressure, response time to query and location performance. The results show that all the system functions meet the demands and the tree structure of data collection also has a good effect.
