The New Standard of National Curriculum requires junior students to master about 1600 words and 300 phrases in the course of their study in junior middle school. But many junior students reflect that vocabulary learning is time-wasted and low-effective, and they can't achieve the goal required in the New Standard of National Curriculum. In order to know about the situation of vocabulary learning strategies'use in rural junior middle school and provide an important basis for curriculum reform, the writer did a research in Jianyang. An investigation of English vocabulary learning strategies was carried in three rural junior middle schools,158 questionnaires were cast. Employing SPSS 10.0, data statistic software, to analyze and compare collected data, the writer finds some problems as follows.1) The rural junior middle school students employ a wide range of strategies. But only mechanical memory is sometimes used by them, the others are seldom used.2) Pearson Correlation between different strategies and vocabulary mark is low, which indicates that rural junior middle school students haven't formed stable and effective learning strategies.3) There exists no difference in four strategies use between Grade 7 and Grade 8.4) Great difference exactly lies between excellent students and poor students in four strategies. The collected data indicates that junior students are in great need of guidance to vocabulary learning strategies; teachers of English are required to help students establish correct belief of vocabulary learning, make them clear of that vocabulary learning strategies are important to their learning, and offer students enough time and chance to practice strategies. On the other hand, students need develop metacognitive capability of self-monitoring, self-regulation and self-evaluation; students do foster their ability to learn English independently. The study finds that it is a long-term for students to master different kinds of vocabulary learning strategies, and teachers have to train students'learning strategies in the course of teaching to improve their learning efficiency.
