There is a wide spread concern on the newly emerged notion "Emotional intelligence", which is regarded as a better indicator to predict the future success of individuals. The development of EI is closed connected with the success or failure of an individual's life and career. As an important aspect of quality cultivation, EI is of great importance to both individuals and the society. This paper revised Bar-on EQ-i:YV, and tested various psychological assessment indexes; Meantime, made a survey on the current EI conditions and laws of Chinese youth. Finally, norms of different groups between male and female, urban and rural, as well as various grade groups were drawn up. The result shows:1. The revised Chinese edition is of high reliability and fair validity, which is a valid tool to assess EI of the youth. EI of the youth has 4 dimensions: Intrapersonal. Interpersonal, Adaptability and Stress Management, with General Mood and Positive Impression as the validity indicators. The result of confirmative factor analysis shows the goodness of fit of EI model.2. The EI level of the youth assessed with the inventory presents an overall forward tendency, and EI problems in proper order reflected by various dimensions are: interpersonal > adaptability > stress management > intrapersonal.3. The EI of the youth has significant gender effects, the total EI of female is significantly higher than male's, while the male's adaptability is significantly higher than female's. Besides, the intrapersonal and interpersonal levels of female are both higher than male's.4. The EI of the youth has significant grade effects, with an overall expression of senior high school students > junior high school students > primary school students of upper grades. In junior group, grade 7 > grade 8 > grade 9; In primary group, grade 5 = grade 6 > grade 4. All of the 4 dimensions of EI as well as General Mood and Positive Impression have significant grade effects.5. The EI of the youth has significant regional effects. The total EI of urban and rural students has no significant effects. However, urban students demonstrate significant higher level than rural students in Interpersonal and Stress Management, and in Positive Impression, the level of rural students is significant higher than urban students. 6. The interactions between genders and grades on EI of the youth are statistically significant. In total EI, the interactions between regions and grades are statistically significant. And the interactions between genders and grades, between genders and regions, between genders, grades and regions are not statistically significant.
