Study And Improvement On Chesterman's "five Models" On Translation Ethics

Translation ethics is a new orientation for the translation research. In the context of economic and cultural globalization, with the chaotic and confusing situation in translation studies caused by putting excessive emphasis on translators'subjectivity and pluralism of translation research approaches, it is significant to come back to the study of translation ethics.In the trends of "return to translation ethics", many scholars at abroad and home have put forward their own ethical translation theories, among which, Andrew Chesterman's "Five Models" is the most representative and systematic, more specifically, ethics of representation—to represent the source text, or the source author's intention, accurately; ethics of service—to fulfill the aim of the translation as set by the client and accepted or negotiated by the translator; ethics of communication—to recognize the Other as a "subject", with whom one can indeed communicate; norm-based ethics—to behave as one is expected in accordance with the norms; ethics of commitment—to support the striving for excellence, the wanting to be a good translator. Systematic and complementary as the "Five Models" are, incompatibility and deficiency still exist, giving rise to the necessity of this thesis:defining the application domains and restrictive conditions in the view of making improvement.In this thesis, the "Five Models" of the ethics of translation proposed by Chesterman, including the essence of each model, their positive and negative interrelationship, are comprehensively analyzed and thereupon a series of suggestions are put forth and an improved system is established, in the hope of setting new models for application of translation ethics to the guidance and evaluation of translation activities, expanding our minds on the study of translation ethics and further proving the necessity and positive effect of introducing ethics into translation studies.
