Rata To Patent Abstract C-e Translating Process

The thesis derives from a hypothesis that RATA of translation studies can explain the C-E translating process of patent abstract. Under the framework of RATA, the author of the thesis adopts the qualitative descriptive method to describe and explain the translating process of arbitrarily-selected examples of patent abstract translation so as to confirm the explanatory power of RATA to this translating process, explore features of the process and provide some translation strategies for patent translation practice.RATA is a pragmatic description paradigm for translation studies, which is cultivated by Dr. Li Zhanxi on the basis of Sperber and Wison's relevance theory and Verschueren's adaptation theory and intends to account for the dynamic workings of the translator's mind in translating process. In the relevance-adjustability system, the translating process is both an ostensive-inferential process and a dynamically-adjusting process. That is, the translator finds the optimal relevance between the source discourse and the context assumptions through inference so as to acquire the context effect and then adopts the adjustability strategy to construct the target discourse under the guidance of the optimal relevance while ensuring the cognitive consonance of readers so as to express the information intention and communicative intention of the author. RATA has been utilized to investigate the translating process of discourse types such as literature, public signs, Bible and the like, but the study focusing on the translating process of technical discourse, especially patent abstract, from the perspective of RATA is rare.Patent abstract is an indispensable part in patent translation which mainly serves the patent application in foreign countries for the intellectual property protection. The State Intellectual Property Office of China has been carrying out the work of patent translation for years, and at present the C-E translation of patent abstract occupies a large proportion of the total patent translation work and has become a rising category of the translation industry with the development of domestic scientific-technological innovation and Sino-western technological exchange. The heavy translation task and the high timeliness, precision and professionalism required by the patent abstract C-E translation become the difficulties troubling patent translators who desire to learn about the features of patent abstract C-E translating process so as to adopt the effective strategies. However, the studies on patent translation are rare and the ones on the patent abstract translation are rarer, and they are mainly based on translation experiences and still far away from the theoretic level of translation studies.Focusing on the above study gap and corresponding significance, the thesis takes the C-E translating process as a case to tentatively describe and explain the translating process under RATA. In the detailed operation, the author probes into the inferential interpreting process of patent titles, new terms, component quantity and deixis respectively in DICP of patent abstract translating; and the author respectively explores the adaptation to contextual correlates, structural objects, adaptation dynamics and salience in DPCP.After describing and analyzing the translating process of patent abstract under RATA, the author arrives at the following conclusions:RATA can be applied to explain the patent abstract C-E translating process; the performance of RT is comparatively poor compared with that in the interpretation of literary translating process, which is determined by the explicit expression of practical discourse; the practical translation possesses high social salience; and the patent abstract C-E translating process is characterized by field cognition, relevancy, adjustability and high social-salience. We suggest that the patent translator should pay more attention to the inference-seeking and adaptation-making at lexical level and social level, and should draw the support from social cognitive experience as mush as possible in the patent translation practice. The author hopes that the study can enrich the study content of patent literature translation and let the translation circles pay more attention to patent literature translation.
