Due to the rapid development of technology, the Internet has become increasingly popular. More and more people begin to rely on Internet as a medium to exchange messages with each other. Meanwhile, as a medium of social intercourse, Computer-Mediated Communication (shortened as CMC hereinafter) has provided a new kind of language variety, which is defined as Netspeak. Its emergence not only meets the requirement of the CMC but also has attracted attention of many linguists and scholars as a new branch of linguistics.Since Netspeak is a novel, special language welcomed by a lot of Netizens, it has influenced the real life of human beings. Therefore, the study of Netspeak is valuable and important. Up to now, some studies of CMC have been done, like the study of its lexicon and syntax. However, comparatively speaking, little pragmatic research of CMC has been done. Thus, the exploration of this newly emerged language from the pragmatics of CMC is necessary and has great significance in promoting satisfactory communication. The author has collected many language samples from several well-liked chat rooms. In order to collect adequate and guarantee data fidelity to analyze adaptation degree of pragmatic theories in Netspeak, the samples are exact copies of the original conversation. Consequently, it includes spelling or grammar errors that take place within the chat rooms. After randomly entering a chat room, the author just remained silent and read the conversations and then picked up appropriate conversations.Firstly, the thesis starts the research from the Internet and Netspeak, provides a brief history of the Internet, and states the definitions of the Internet, Netspeak and chat room respectively. And it continues to introduce the Netspeak from the causes for the development of Netspeak, including cultural factors, social backgrounds, technological foundations and psychological factors. By discussing these causes, this thesis offers a general view of its features. In the new context of the Internet, this kind of language variety possesses its uniqueness different from that of face-to-face communication.Considering different communication aims, in face-to-face communication, people have to conform to some communication principles, such as Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle. They are regarded as the general guidelines to successful human communication. These maxims are common in communication in every language community. This thesis is oriented to complete the analysis of text-based CMC on the basis of those two communicative principles of language. It addresses to the following questions:1. As pragmatics focuses on the conveyance of meaning in the course of communication, it is well-known that they are undoubtedly fundamental concepts in pragmatics analysis. How do they operate in online chatroom conversations? Do they work the same as in face-to-face conversation?2. If Internet users fail to fulfill the maxims of CP and PP in chatroom conversation, what are reasons?3. How do participants deviate maxims of CP and PP?4. Is there any new strategy to compensate them to ensure successful communication? From the analysis, the author finds that Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle are still work in online chat room. However, it is true that deviations of maxim of CP and PP exit in chatroom conversations at the same time. Some maxims of them are easily violated to some degree, such as spoof, trolling, lurking and so on.Furthermore, it is its variety of distinctive features which are unique to the Internet summarized from the causes for the development of Netspeak that gives the chance for internet users to violate CP and PP. What is more, deviation of CP and PP has already become inevitable and universal. Moreover, in order to make communication successful, internet users have been used to a series of approaches of interlocutions which broke original pragmatic principles.Lastly, in order to keep peace with the development and necessity of internet communication, it gives rise to create more and more practical and adaptable pragmatic strategies in the new communication context, such as (a) economy principle. (b) multi-topic principle. (c) recreation principle. (d) freedom and equality principle. (e) tolerance principle. (f) impression management principle. To control or guide the impression that others might make of him, mainly compensational strategies include self-presentation strategy, discourse avoidance strategy and maintenance strategy. It is no wonder that pragmatic strategies are limitless. The author hopes this thesis may serve as reference for further study of Netspeak and help people have a better understanding of CMC. Moreover, it may inspire more researchers'interests in this field so that CMC can be promoted and meet the requirements of the rapid development of the society.
