The natural resource of Abutilon theophrasti Medic, is rich, distributed in all of China. The entire plant of Abutilon theophrasti Medic, has the effect of detoxication and expelling wind-evil, always used to cure dysentery, tymp-anitis, tinnitus, deafness, arthralgia and rheumatic arthritis. It have efficacy significantly to cure rheumatoid arthritis in folk.Although Abutilon is widespread applied among civilian, the study about its chemical compositions and pharmacologic actions is rare, furthermore lucubrating research on its effective component. As far as possible to develop and utilize the abundant plant resource, pharmacognosy and pharmacodyna-mics of Abutilon were studied in our experiment. With pharmacognostical study, the key feature of Abutilon theophrasti Medic, is described as follow:alternation leaves, shape of leaf blade is round-cordiform, palm-net vein, two sides of leaf are covered by lanugo; flo-wer is yellow, petal is obovate, capsular fruit is hemispheroid; 15~20 mericarp, covered by shag, with two long arista on apiculus; seeds is kidney shape and brown. The feature of powder identified by microscope is desc-ribed as follow:anomocytictye stomate, numerous star-shaped non-glandular hairs, glandularia is consisted of single cell cephal-gland and multi-cell adenophore, numerous calcium oxalate cluster crystal.By systemic pretesting of stem and leaf of Abutilon theophrasti Medic, flavones, phenols, polysaccharides, steroids, organic acids, coumarins, lacto-nes, saponins and amino acid were initial found, while anthraquinones, alka-loids and tannins wasn't. Result of ultraviolet spectrophotometry showed total flavonoids content in the stem and leaf of Abutilon theophrasti Medic, is 5.41%.Consequences of xylene-induced mice ear bulge, granuloma, action acid causing body distortion test in mice and action to pain caused by heat in mice reveal an anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of stem and leaf of Abutilon theophrasti Medic, which is extracted by water and alcohol. Through traditional screening methods to identify its alcohol extract parts of butanol and ethyl acetate as effective components of Abutilon theophrasti to anti-inflammatory and analgesic, and butanol layer is superior to ethyl acetate layer. It's the first time to systemic study the pharmacognosy and pharmacody-namics of stem and leaf of Abutilon theophrasti Medic, which may provide a rationale not only for developing and utilizing the abundant plant resource, but also for exploiting a new anti-rheumatic agents.
