Ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC, trademark: Payiean) is a new swine feed ingredient from Elanco Animal Health. Molecular Structure:It is a phenethanolamine member of the family of β-adrenergic agonists (β-agonists). This class of compounds has become notable for their properties of enhancing the growth rates of farm animal species. When fed to swine in the final stage of the finishing period, paylean increases live weight gain and improves feed efficiency, while maintaining pork's natural taste, tenderness and juiciness. It's the only product of its type approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in swine being fed in confinement for slaughter.Payiean stimulates beta-receptors on cell surfaces. These receptors are present in both skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. The primary effect of payiean is to increase the size of the muscle fibers by directing nutrients to increase protein synthesis. Payiean has minimal effects on fat metabolism. Paylean's unique structure and biological properties make it different from other beta-agonists. For example, Clenbuterol is banned for use in food animals because of human safety concerns. Payiean is approved by the FDA for use in swine and meets FDA's stringent animal, environmental and food safety standards. This paper relates to a method for synthesizing ractopamine hydrochloride by using p-hydroxyacetophenone and raspberry ketone as raw materials. 1. The p-hydroxyacetophenone is processed by catalytic brominating reaction to obtain omega-bromo-p-hydroxyacetophenone.
