Hibanobambusa tranquillans f. shiroshima H.Okamura which originated in Japan is a very precious ornamental bamboo with colorful leaves. There is no research paper about it in China. The taxonomic position, biological characteristic and photosynthetic characteristic about this bamboo were investigated in this paper. The results are as follows:The genomic DNA of Hibanobambusa tranquillans f. shiroshima, its possible parent and other four similar bamboo species were analyzed by random amplified polymorphism DNA markers. From the amplification results of 16 random 10bp primers, the matrix of similarity and dendrogram was established through the calculation of popgene32. The result had shown that H. tranquillans f. shiroshima has close relation with species of Phyllostachys, but it was not closely related to the species of Sasa. The result supported the hypotheses that the genus Hibanobambusa was generated by natural hybridization rather than a mutation of Sasa veitchiif. tyugokensis, and in the hybridization process the species of Phyllostachys had done more contribution than Sasa veitchii f. tyugokensis to the hybridism. The result also supported the view that made Hibanobambusa as a independent genus.Biological characters were studied systematically, the results were as follows: Bamboo shoot emerged from later April to middle May. When the number of bamboo in a square meter was about 20, the shooting rate will be higher. The height growth of bamboo culm followed the slow-quick-slow pattern. It usually needs 28 days to finish the process. The reason why later emerged shoots can finish height growth quickly is they had short early growth stage and last growth stage. If planted with the interval of 1×1.5m, The number of bamboo culm in the plot plantation would reach a reasonable desity in the third year. The investigations on bamboo rhizome discovered that Rhizomes almost distribute in the 0-20cm soil layer, and 76.9% of them distribute in the 0- 10cm soil layer. Most of rhizome root distribute in the 0- 10cm soil layer too, and these roots contain more water than roots in other soil layers. Rhizomes growth have two main characters: one is that the top of rhizome won't fall off, and continue to grow in the next year and form a long rhizome without branches; the other is that one year old bamboo generally develope at least two buds at the culm base, and one of them maybe develop into a rhizome.The researches on photosynthetic characteristic had shown that the daily change of photosynthetic rate was a "double peak" curve, and had obviously "siesta" phenomena. Humidity and stomatal conductance were correlated with photosynthetic rate, and high light intensity and temperature in noon cause "siesta" phenomena. Through the comparison between different leaves, we also discovered that the yellow stripe on leaves won't weaken photosynthetic activity; specific leaf weight, content of chlorophyll, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate in 1-2 years old bamboo's leaves was higher than in 3-4 years old bamboo's leaves, so the former had stronger photosynthetic activity than the latter.
