Pot experiment was conducted with calcareous soil by the split plot design. The main treatment was soil water content which had three level presented by A1, A2, A3; the subsidiary treatment was fertilizer application which had four level presented by B0, B1, B2, and B3. The influence of coupling effect between water and fertilizer on growth, yield, grain protein content of maize, the transformation of soil fertility and soil bioactivity were studied in this experiment. The main results were summarized as follows: 1. Fertilizer application could improve content of soil nutrient among water treatments. With soil water content improving, increased the content of soil nutrient among fertilizer treatments. 2. At maize growth stage, the activity of soil urease activity and the activity of alkaline phosphates increased, reached summit at booting stage, and then gradual decreased. 3. Fertilizer application had significant influence on the content of chlorophyll in maize leafs at different growing stage. Preferential water (A3) significant increased the content of chlorophyll among three water treatments, and the best treatment was A3B3. 4. Water stress (A1) could inhibit maize growth, however maize could normal growth under light water stress level (A2) among fertilizer treatments. Fertilizer application could induce maize growth, but with increasing of fertilizer, decreased fertilizer effect among fertilizer treatments. 5. With soil water content rising, biological yield and grain yield of maize significantly increased, and the best treatment was A3B3 to biological yield and A3B2 to grain yield. 6. Fertilizer application could significant increase the content of grain protein, however with increasing of fertilizer, decreased fertilizer effect among fertilizer treatments. With increasing of soil water content, improved the content of grain protein, however decreased fertilizer effect among three water treatments. The best treatment was A3B3.
