It is often met with some fuzzy words in Engineering Structural Design Codes such as long and short, deep and shallow, thick and thin, and how it can be distinguished with these conceptions? The codes provide some limited numerical values to deal with the judgments, such as the ratio of shear span for defining the short column, the span-depth ratio for defining the deep beam. These values cames from the experimenal analysis, theory calculation, and engineering from this angle of mechanical characteristics. With the structure members mechanical properties thorough research, the engineering structure dynamic characteristic get high opinion, which show superiority in many fields. So how to simplify analysis is the forcus on discussion in the article.The self-frequencies and the vibrant modes are the connatural parameters of the engineering structures and members. The quantities of the frequencies relate to the distribution of the absolute stiffness and mass of a structure, and the orders of the modes reflect the distribution of the relative one, by which we can differentiate similar members. Comparing with strain and stress parameters, which reflect the mechanical characteristics of a member, the dynamic parameters of a structure member are related to the distribution characteristics of the stiffness and mass of structure wholly or partly. This method can be more directly used to the quantification analysis, and is beneficial to the conception research about structure or member.For these reasons, and under the fund of Researching on the theories of structure designing based on the time and spectrum analysis (EESR200704), the Open Fund Project of Key Lab in Beijing, it studies the subject "Researching the conceptions of the structure members by analyzing its vibrant modes characterisitics". With the connatural parameters of the engineering structures-- self-frequency and the vibrant modes, the author put forward innovative views of the understanding about the member conceptions of beam and column. The main work is as below:(1) The typical structure members such as deep beam and shallow, short column and long column etc, whose conceptions were discussed by common mechanics analysis method.(2) From the point of modes analysis, this paper researched various structure members again, and got completely new cognition by two modeling means of beam cell and body model.(3) The paper analyzed and compared the results of modes analysis and the conception from the limited value in the codes.It verified to be convenient and feasible that dynamic characteristic parameters are used to the conception research.
