CMOS image sensor (CIS) has advantages of low power consumption, high integration and high radiation tolerance. Camera systems which are used for space application based on high performance CISs have samll volume, weight and low power dissipation, as well as their cost and development cycle are decreased. CISs have been used by developed countries in the domain of star tracker, sun tracker and remote sensing imagers.This paper is about the design of a camera system based on a high performance CIS- LUPA-4000. Characteristics of CIS had been deeply researched in the designing and experimentation process and technical experience had been accumulated.The main works of this paper are:1. The present situation of CIS used in space application has been introduced.2. Pixel circuit, chip architecture, technical parameters and latest development of CIS have been discussed in detail. Its performances have been compared with CCD.3. Several LDO and a voltage monitoring chip have been chosen to build the hardware power system after examining the pixel structure and power supplies of LUPA-4000; FPGA has been chosen to be driving signals' hard carrier by analyzing its character. Communication and data transfer devices have been employed to build the system circuit board.4. The CIS's driving program has been described in VHDL. It consists of communication, CIS's driving and data format conversion and provides SPI register initialization, integration time adjusting, synchronization style switching.5. CIS's main parameters have been obtained by testing after system debugging. All the camera system functions have been proved by experimental image capturing.6. Problems have been summed up and suggestions have been given for the future design.The camera system runs steadily and reliably after long time experiment and testing. Photos with high quality have been taken by it. Camera system based on CIS could be a choice for space application.
