China's economy is developing with an increasing speed, so is the urbanization process. With increasing number and size of cities, the residents' living condition is also improving. However, the rapid expansion of cities has also brought many issus: population density, traffic congestion, environmental pollution, shortage of green space, all of which have great impact or even constrain the sustainable development of cities. The experience of the modern city construction in developed countries shows that utilization of underground space, in an orderly, rational, integrated and efficient manner, is an effective way of resolving those constrains in the development of cities. This also constitutes the new concept of coordinated development of surface area and underground space in a city the three-dimensional comprehensive development of city space. The underground commercial buildings originate from the utilization of basements, air-raid shelters, pedestrian underground passages. The major form of utilization is to construct shops along the sides of the passages linking those underground spaces. After 70 years of construction, the ground buildings has changed greatly in their size and purposes, from purely commercial purposes to traffic, commercial, entertainment and other facilities. This is now an important part in the comprehensive utilization of urban underground space. This paper is focuses on the integrated design of the entire environment of the urban underground construction in China. Based on the currently situation and problems in our country, and referring to the experiences from developed countries, the methods of rational and effective utilization of he underground space is discussed. The basic principles of integrated esign of underground commercial constructions are presented, as well as the trategies and methods under these princples.
