As the development of computer technology and network communications technology, lots of new techniques are applied in transformer substation, then the substation automation system is rapidly grown. Microcomputer protection and measurement device has been fast-changing with the progress of embedded chips (MCU/DSP). Relay manufacturers launch the devices from generation to generation following the new techniques. Along with the hyper growth of processor integrated level and performance, a single chip can meet mostly needs of relay devices, and then the general hardware and software platforms for relay to be possible. Based on the module's design method, the starting point of platform is to reduce redesigned and new unit. So all types of relays are finished development by choosing necessary unit from platform, and then the development time is greatly saved. And so on, some hardware and software functional modules of general platform can be used in new platform following the developing of MCU.The development tendency of microcomputer protection and the development of microcomputer relay device's platform are introduced in this paper. At the same time, this paper also introduces the source of modularization design method. To the domestic medium and low-voltage systems requirement, the paper puts forward an overall design solution for general microcomputer relay device's platform adopting modularization design, then design research the platform as follows:Architecture general platform: applying modularization design method combined with EMC, reasonable configuration model and friendly interface, etc. to design the platform. The design is described in detail.Hardware general platform: applying modularization design method to design the platform including CPU, digital input, digital output, communication unit, clock unit, AC unit, and power, etc. Design principles and features are described in detail.Software general platform: applying modularization design method to design the platform with design concept, design requirement, hierarchy, and software process. And these are described in detail.At last, this paper describes the solutions of various kinds of difficulties in relay devices permit test, and introduces the testing result of line protective device designed by the general platform. It turned out that all functions meet the design and field running requirements.The advantages of modularization design scheme are accelerating development, reducing development and maintenance cost, improving safety and reliability. It also laid the foundation of researching and developing digital substation which totally accords with the IEC61850 standard.
