Single-phase flux switching motor is a new type, double salient structure, concentrated winding, no permanent magnet on stator or rotor, and simple structure. It has the character of low cost, long life, silent operation, used to be in domestic appliance, power tools, light industrial and automotive markets. The cost of motor itself is lower than the equivalent induction machine or permanent magnet machine. But single-phase flux switching motor needs to be coupled with a power electronic controller, it's whole motor system cost is still lower than other speed control system, such as reluctance motor system. So it's extremely low cost is the potential in speed control system market. However flux switching motor has been presented not long time, no matter it's operation principle or design method, control strategy still need more investigation. Because magnetic circuit is saturated, traditional motor analysis method is not suitable. Besides ever research, the main study works of this paper are as follows.1. Flux switching motor's topology, principle and character of operation was introduced, motor's performance was calculated. Flux switching motor's design program was made in MATLAB language.2. Based on the operation principle and character of single-phase flux switching motor, a non-linear simulation mode was made in MATLAB to simulate motor's operation.3. A static finite model was developed to analysis air gap magnetic field distribution and torque varied with rotor position, coil current; a time-stepping finite element behavioral model was developed to verify motor's performance.4. Upon design equations, simulation result and finite analysis, an experimental motor and controller was made. Finally, test results of the experimental motor are provided to verify the design equations and benefits of the controller.
