Reflection Of Public Art In The Status Quo And Suggestions

This thesis which begins from developing conditions of the public art in Beijing since reform and open , one hand , confirms its achievement , on the other hand ,points out its shortcomings and gives some pertinent suggestions comparing with it in other cities of China and western countries .The thesis wants to shed lights on the spiritual substance of the modern public art further in order to construct the public art at communities,streets,squares in Beijing using scientific,all sorts of new artistic methods and materials in new times to preserve tradition and keep up with the times ,hoping that the public art can progress and get perfect in Beijing. In modern western countries such as U.S.A, the concept of the public art has formed a fairly complete theoretical system and the policies of the government has been encouraging and popularizing the developing of the public art .So the artists,the public and the citizens altogether have woven the enormous and dense net of the western public art .Recently, with the starting of popularization of the public art, some critics and artists posed concept and views about it .For example,《Times of the Public Art》by Sun Zhenhai, mainly discussed the origins ,ideas and characters of the contemporary public art in western countries in detail and profoundly. Through the concept of the public art and public researches ,《Studies for the Public Art in Beijing》by Shi Xiangdong, advanced that the public art is not a general designation of one or several artistic forms, is the artistic idea which get the public art in harmony with construction of the cities through the participation of the public and altogether compose the progress of the public art through protecting the urban cultural legacy and stressing the coordination between urban program and garden etc. Stating the facts of the developing conditions of the public art in Beijing since reform and open , comparing with facts (the differences of the public art in Beijing and other cities of China as well as western countries) and illustrating with lots of examples, the thesis attempts to raise four relatively specific suggestions for the developing directions of the modern public art in Beijing .So I hope that my views as following can pour a little fresh vigour into the river of the public art in Beijing.
