Embedded system is a special computer system, which is based on computer technology, faced with applications, and satisfied with the application demand about function, reliability, cost, volumes and power consumption. For an embedded system design, the most important things are: how to design the system rapidly for the different application, how to follow the client's demand, and how to control the cost and time.In this article, we focus on researching the principles and methods of embedded system design. Under researched the embedded system's reliability design and the co-design of the software and hardware, we finished an equipment design, which is used for tax collection.At First, we analyse the embedded system's design process. Then we research the design method of embedded system as a whole, and the theory of software and hardware co-design approach. The second, we research the hardware design approach and summarize the anti-jamming design approach for hardware. Finally we research the normal process for software design, and analyse the software design method for reliability and expansibility, which afford the theory support for the actual equipment design.In the design, we use those design approach into the equipment design which is used for tax collection. At first we analyse the customer's requirement and the equipment's application environment, and divide the system into different module function with the modularization concept. Then considering the system's cost and reliability, we realize the equipment's hardware design though the detailed design of different modules, such as main board module, print module, power module, display module and keyboard module. Finally, we start the equipment software design. We realize the software framework of system, the software hiberarchy and the software design process. At last, after introduced the program of hardware driver layer and program unload process, we finished the equipment design.
