In Aluminum Corporation of China Limited, ZhongZhou Branch, the padding seals which are used to seal the slurry pumps for alumina transportation always need to be replaced for its' short service life. This not only reduces the production efficiency but brings great loss to the company. Because of the sealing performance is not good, leakage is very serious and the working environment is badly polluted. In this article, we analyzed the KC150 slurry pump of the company and designed a new kind of mechanical seal ZJ75 in order to solve the mentioned problems.When a mechanical seal is running, three regimes can be distinguished. These are boundary friction regime, fluid friction regime and mixed friction regime. The author discussed each of them dividually and listed several methods which can be used to separate the regimes. The literature also analyzed the working regime of ZJ75 mechanical seal when it works normally.The author introduced the Finite Element Analysis method of the steady thermal problem and calculated the temperature field of the ZJ75 mechanical seal by F.E.A. software Ansys. The material of assistant seal is selected according to the result.By using the coupling analysis function of Ansys and combining the results of thermal calculation, the author did the Thermal—Stress coupling analysis of the ZJ75 mechanical seal and obtained the numerical calculation results of the seal's deformation and stress distribution in it's stable working condition. The result shows the deformation of ZJ75 is so tiny that the granules in the liquid would not enter the gap between two seal faces, which may cause to abrasive wear and destroy the mechanical seal.In this article the Thermal—Stress transient coupling analysis of the ZJ75 mechanical seal was carried out in the motor starting stage. According to the analysis results the author listed several items which are used for reducing the thermal crack in the seal surfaces.By doing experiments, we can see that if the ZJ75 mechanical seal runs normally, the friction regime and the value of temperature is consistent with the result of theory analysis. The experiment confirmed that the mechanical seal runs in a good performance. The research about the slurry pump mechanical seal for alumina transportation in the article has certain theory significance and practical value.
