The horizontal decanter centrifuge, a typical dual-rotor structure with very little rotating speed difference, is a kind of separation machinery with continuous operation, large scale of materials, powerful productivity and low labor intensity, so it has been widely used in almost every department of the national economy. These years, it is notable that the horizontal decanter centrifuge is becoming larger and larger and its speed is becoming higher and higher in order to improve its separation effect and to increase its productivity. But with the increase of the rotating speed and its slenderness ratio, the rotor dynamic characteristics of the decanter will change a lot, so it is very important to do researches on the dynamic characteristics of the centrifuge. Besides this, because of the dual rotors which are rotating at very little different speeds, the vibration of the horizontal decanter centrifuge is very complicated, and it is difficult to do dynamic balancing of the decanter. So understanding the rotor dynamic characters of the centrifuge is useful and helpful for doing dynamic balancing. The main aspects of the research work done in this paper are: first, the application and trend of development of the decanter is introduced, and the dynamic balancing methods of rotors, especially the horizontal decanter centrifuge, are summarized. Second, the contents and the methods of rotor dynamics are introduced in the paper, and the finite element method is introduced briefly. Then, the finite element models of the outside rotor, inside rotor and the structure of dual rotors are built and their rotor dynamic characters such as critical speed, modal shape and unbalance response are calculated. And then, through changing the parameters of the dual-rotor structure, the effects of each parameter on the rotor dynamic characters are obtained. At last, the finite element model of the whole machine is built, its natural frequencies are calculated and the validity of the results is proved.
