Accompany the rapid development of computer technology, the finite element method has become the most popular numerical procedure in the structural analysis during the past 30 years, which has also been widely used in hydropower engineering and become a primary analysis method. At the same time, there are many urgent problems need to be solved in the analysis of hydraulic structure, such as improving the rules of safety evaluation. The 'Design specification for concrete gravity dams' gives the rules of static analysis when using finite element method, this study compares the results of finite element equivalent stress method and mechanics of materials method to explain whether the former is effective. However, the rules of dynamic analysis haven't been established yet, which limited the application of finite element method in the field. Therefore, it's urgent to study the dynamic response of gravity dam and establish the rules of safety evaluation. This study tells how to decide the finite element mesh density, also, the response of gravity dam, especially the heel region, has been studied, which gives suggestions to the dynamic safety assessment of gravity dam.In this study, a gravity dam analysis program for static and dynamic response of nonlinear systems is written, in which a nonlinear joint element and a efficient numerical procedure which is called substructure approach are implemented. And crack growth computations for several different heights of dams have been done.
