Aerostatic bearing has an increasingly wide application in ultra-precision machining and ultra precision testing with its specific advantages, such as high precision, no friction etc. The project, Study and Design on Aerostatic Spindle System in Precision Turning, which is supported by the fund of Institute of Mechanical Manufacturing Technology in China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP), is established to master the key technology of aerostatic bearing and explore a technical route for researching and manufacturing aerostatic spindles. This paper, which is supported by the fund project, spends most of time to explore the numerical analysis method and experimental approach to research the static and dynamic characteristics of aerostatic bearing on various bearing parameters, so that the design level of aerostatic bearing will be improved to satisfy different demands.Based on the lubrication theory, the author proposes a method to solve the Reynolds Equation by using the MATLAB Partial Differential Equation (PDE) Toolbox as the solver, which bases on the finite element method (FEM), and provides a very convenient and quick solving approach for differential equations in standard form. The static and dynamic characteristics of aerostatic bearing are deeply researched by the method mentioned above. Based on the theoretical analysis, a set of aerostatic bearing for experiment is designed and manufactured, of which the static and dynamic characteristics is tested.The main research content and characteristics of this paper are as follows:(1) The mathematical model of aerostatic bearing is established from the general form of Reynolds equation, considering the real work condition.(2) After the dimensionless form of Reynolds equation derived from the general form, a method is proposed to solve the Reynolds equation based on MATLAB PDE Toolbox and FEM.(3) Some modules of MATLAB PDE Toolbox are modified that makes all the units right-angled triangle when meshing. A programming idea, expanding the journal bearing to a surface on the opposite generatrix when iterating to get the pressure on the generetrix, is proposed. The effect between bearing parameters and static performance of aerostatic bearing is analyzed after large quantities of data related to static characteristics with variety of bearing geometrical parameters is calculated out.(4) An approach, which can be widely applied, is given to calculate the dynamic...
