Air bearing technology is an advanced technique developed with the Hi-tech, which owns unique characteristics as much low friction, no wear, no pollution, with high rotating precision and can working under the conditions of high or low temperature circumstance, etc. Based on these factors, air bearings have been widely applied to the high speed spindle and super precision spindleA new-style method was introduced in the design of high-speed and high- power spindle full supported with static pressure bearing to improve its static state stiffness and loading capacity, the machining capacity of the air spindle can extend from traditional application as high speed drilling and grinding to high-speed, super precision milling and turning.In this paper, the design and the static and dynamic performance of the air spindle were studied with Finite Element Method (FEM), Details of studies are as follows:1. Structure design: the key factors to the design of the high-speed and high-power spindle full supported with static pressure bearings are discussed, and the selection of the restrictor and motor of the spindle , the computation of the gas gap of the air bearing are presented.2. One dimension FEM analysis: The static pressure air bearing is simplified with a non-linear spring, and a simple method is developed to calculat the static stiffness of the spindle. Dynamic analysis are also conducted, including model analysis and harmonic analysis. The natural frequency and the theoretical mode the FEM of the spindle are studied and dynamic stiffness, dynamic displacement of the spindle are also been presented.3. Fluid-solid-couple analysis with FEM is developed for the analysis of the static stiffness of the new style spinle. The physical model of the spindle full supported with static pressure bearings are constructed with FEM and the accurracy of the FEM analysis is improved greatly.4.
