Impulse heavy current technology, as one of the important researches of pulse power techniques, is also widely applied to technology of high-temperature plasma, strong magnetic field, mechanics effects and so on. This paper describes an impulse heavy current system applied to a new field of science of materials. The impulse heavy current flows through sheet metal and explodes it, which can produce nanometer-metal granules. And the granules are sprayed over metal workpiece by accelerated power of electric field. The characteristics of rigidity and abrasion of the metal workpiece are greatly improved by this way.In this paper, the developing status of impulse heavy current technology is mainly introduced. And some correlative techniques and the way of getting impulse heavy current are also mentioned. The technology of high power constant current charging, high voltage heavy current discharging switch, high speed and high voltage pulse generator, precision synchronization delay, auto control and so on are concretely introduced in this paper.The technology of alternating-current-boosting by way of constant current is successfully used to charge capacitors with 25 kilojoules of energy in only eight seconds. Rail-gap switch with performances of long life and highly steady state are designed. And the high voltage pulse generator, which can produce low-excursion and fast-rise pulses, are designed by using double trigger circuit and hydro-thyristor as switch. Using singlechip and PLD develops delay synchronizer with precision of 10 nanoseconds. From the view of auto control, system of PLC is successfully applied to the system of high voltage, using photoelectric isolated circuit to solve the problem of electromagnetic disturbance.The system has six channels of output. Each channel can store up 25 kilojoules of energy and output 150 kA of peak current. It can work in mode of single channel, six channels and two channels. And the system can work both by way of computer control and manual control. The whole system is planned to work about hundreds of thousands times.
