Marly crack and deterioration of many bridge deck overlays have been attributed to the traffic load, nature factor and high thermal or shrinkage stress development in the concrete. These cracks accelerate deterioration of concrete and corrosion of reinforcing steel that shorten the service lives and increases the maintenance costs of bridge decks. On the basis of summing up the study achievements both home and abroad, this study was conducted to develop several new bridge deck materials that has low cracking potential, low permeability, good durability, and adequate strength. The key technical problems of construction and the design of concrete mix on bridge deck overlays, the modified effect of high effect water reducer, reticulate polypropylene fiber and polyacryamide(PAM) to concrete are studied systematically by many tests and theoretical analysis. The law of flexural strength, bond strength, the ratio of compressive strength to flexural strength, permeability, abrasion resistance, bending fatigue property, impact toughness, flexural toughness and shrinkage is obtained. Through scanning electron microscope, differential thermal analyzer, thermogravimetric analyzer and infrared spectrum, the micro structure of concrete bridge deck, physic-chemical reaction of the additive materials to concrete are analysed, as well as discussed the ameliorated effects of that to road performance of concrete bridge deck overlays. The technical problems of design and construction on waterproof concrete, fiber concrete and polymer-cement concrete are probed into in this works, and the technology construction of bridge deck overlays is presented. This article also discusses the feasibility on application of waterproof concrete, reticulate polypropylene fiber concrete and PAM modified concrete to bridge deck overlays and analyses the economic and social effects .
