As the heart of a ship— the main propulsion apparatus is the source of the power. As safe, fast, superior-device and economy oriented sailing of a ship basically lies in the safe and dependable performance of it. During an ocean voyage, it will threaten the safety of ships, lives and property or even cause pollution of the sea once the main propulsion apparatus gets broken down. The continuous, fast and healthy development of the National Economy has set a higher demand on the reliability of the main propulsion apparatus. However, since the research on the reliability of the ship in our country starts late, the main propulsion apparatus, as the most important part of a ship, needs to be improved and perfected badly.The above task is a systematic project, as there are various factors relating to designing, choosing, installing, maintaining and individual operation, which will no doubt affect the reliability of the main propulsion apparatus. Focus has been drawn on increase of the reliability of the main propulsion apparatus itself by efforts from manufacturers and designing companies via a variety of new means, and continuous endeavors have been made to improve its structure, the reliability of its spare parts and to provide a complete sets of models. Nevertheless, all these efforts haven't been able to solve the problem completely, especially under the current technical condition and device. How to improve the reliability of the main propulsion apparatus is still waiting us to research and to practice.The traditional method based on isolated analysis cannot meet the requirement of the development of the reliability of the main propulsion apparatus; therefore it is necessary to adopt advanced mathematics theory methods to research the degrees of the reliability of the main propulsion apparatus by its nature and quantification. Based on the analysis of the breakdown of the main propulsion apparatus and the reliable mathematics model, this paper analyses and judges the reliability of the main propulsion apparatus by FTA and FCE. Meanwhile on the current device and technology, this paper also discusses the technical measures of improving the main propulsion apparatus of small and middle size ships by practice.There are a variety of means to improve the reliability of the main propulsion apparatus of small and middle size ships. According to my experience and considering the reality of the propulsion apparatus, this thesis guarantees theships' operation safely and reliably by optimizing endurance period based on the principles of practicability and operation. In order to ensure the endurance period of old ships, it can collocate the propeller again in case of the main engine over operation. It cannot only improve the degree of the ship's automation, but also the operation and reliability of the main propulsion apparatus by impelling the BRC device of the small and middle size ships. Put the reliability centered maintenance into practice and grasp the rules of abrasion. By collecting, settling, statistic and analysis the reliable data, enhance the service designing of the main propulsion apparatus.It will certainly improve the reliability of ships' main propulsion apparatus and ensure the safety of voyage by recognition the current technology improved or the application of advanced technology and management methods in the main propulsion apparatus.
