This paper primarily researches a method for three-dimensional parametric modeling and analyzing static characteristic of cylindrical gears based on Pro/E and ANSYS software.A model of calculating load distributions, transmission error and bending stress of root fillet of gear teeth has been studied and discussed. Through the coordinate systems of gear profile and the corresponding matrices of coordinate transformation, the load distribution of external or internal helical gears can be exactly determined. Base on this method, the load distributions along the contact lines during the whole engagement period is calculated. The transmission error, mesh stiffness and root stresses in different cross-sections along face-width of helical gear has also been calculated and compared. With the aid of Pro/E software, a precise parametric model of cylindrical gears is constructed. Aiming to building a general three-dimensional thin rimmed gear model, this model can receive the input of parameter list with Windows user interface. According to the parameters, it constructs the new model immediately and transfers it to the model of ANSYS file format. All of FEM processes of ANSYS are managed by the APDL program language and macros technique. These macros include precise mesh control, parametric loadings, solutions and post-process. By reading in the correlative parameters and results from FORTRAN module, the same APDL procedures can be used to analyse different gear models. So repeatedly analyzing different dimensions and loads can be conveniently implemented by modifying parameters, which is more efficient. The orthogonal experiment method is advised to optimize the complex mechanical structure. According to the extreme deviation and the square deviation analyze of test results, the influences of each structure parameters to the objective are studied. After analyzing, it indicates that the orthogonal test is a good approach to do the cylindrical gears' structure parameters optimal design.
