The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) is an important motive power machine in traffic & transportation and national defense construction. With more and more strict needs for the engine performance, new products have been developed rapidly. At the same time, the consciousness of social environment protection is stressed day by day. All of these are the reasons that require the engines to be tested in all aspects before fully commercialized. Today, the dynamometers for such purpose are of many types, but how to make the dynamometer control system function with superior quality, has become a key factor that improves ICE test technology.In this paper, an automatic control system based on the electric eddy dynamometer is introduced. In the system, rotation speed and torque tested by sensor are considered as a reference variables, which are used in PID algorithm to make ICE come to work at a set state by adjusting the throttle of ICE and excitation current of dynamometer. Some efforts have been made for this aim.Firstly, we have had a simulated test to tune the parameters of PID. In this test, LPC2200 MCU (Micro Control Unit ) is used as main control unit, which provides a software editing environment, in which we can edit program to control the throttle by changing the P, I, D parameters, and get some different states, and can determine the parameters by choosing the optimum state.Secondly, based on GW63 type dynamometer, the rotation speed and torque obtained by the system were regarded as reference variables of the system algorithm. In the signalgathering process, we increased the frequency of A/D transform, analyzed the torque signal that was disturbed by background such as noise> vibration, and filter the disturbance in order to make the signal input correct.At last, we do some experiments in Chang Zhou diesel factory and Shan Dong HuaYuan ICE Company to verify this control system product. In the experiments, we have tested several operating states of the sample engine, and drew the performance lines. The system is reliable> stable and safe in contrast with theoretical performance lines of the engine.
