The aim of the Environment Control System (ECS) of aircraft is to supply a high quality air in order to comfort passengers and crew, as well as to cool the electronic devices. Due to the important function of ECS in aircraft, it is rather essential to diagnose the faults for the ECS effectively and enhance the reliability of this system. With the complexity of the ECS increasing and less fault diagnosis research on this system, the fault diagnosis for the ECS is studied to solve this problem in this paper.Firstly, based on previous research, mathematical models of the ECS are improved. The mathematical models of heat exchanger, turbo, compressor and pipe are set up in this paper. Using MATLAB, the process of the ECS is simulated. The mathematical models are useful to study fault diagnosis for the ECS.Secondly, because of the complexity of the ECS, several methods of fault. diagnosis are used in this system. According to the differences of the ECS components, the parameter estimation method is applied in heat exchanger, the expert system method is used to turbo and compressor, and the observer-based method is used to the control system. The typical faults of these components are simulated in MATLAB environment. The results indicate that these methods are correct and effective. Finally, base on the research mentioned above, simulation software of fault diagnosis for the ECS is developed through MATLAB. The simulation function of fault diagnosis for the ECS is implemented in this software platform.
