By combining the theory of material science and finite element method (FEM), the structure of composite flywheel rotor was studied in this paper, the stress and strain in a spinning rotor was analyzed by FEM, and an optimization method of the flywheel rotor structure was put forward. According to filament winding process, a composite flywheel rotor laminated winding process was approved. By using Acoustic Emission Technology (AET), different composite material samples were tested detecting its damage and fracture, and relationships between AET curve diagrams and damage types were found, so, the technology could be used in the field of composite flywheel nondestructive examination (NDE). Some composite flywheel rotors were rotated, its failure was studied for finding methods of increasing the maximal speed of composite flywheel rotor.The study proved that laminated winding process could effective take advantage of composite material and increase the maximal speed of composite flywheel rotor for energy storage.
