As the expressway mileage grows, the maintenance of expressways has become increasingly important. The asphalt roads of expressways are damaged in the early days. The road functions deteriorate drastically. And the actual limited years of roads are dropping. All these pressing problems require more advanced maintenance technology. Therefore, it is urgent to study and develop expressway maintenance technologies, so as to guide the maintaining work scientifically.It is stipulated in the current "Rule & Regulations on Maintenance Technology of Asphalt Roads" that, PQI are adopted as the evaluation indexes in the road comprehensive evaluation, which is the weighted average of the road functions (including PCI, RQI, SSI, and SFC). The roads' whole situation is reflected in the using and maintaining process.In China, we have just started studying on the maintenance technology of the roads of expressways. The studies require further checking by practice. The maintenance history is short. Most of the maintenance evaluations are manual and they are not advanced or accurate enough. The maintaining solutions are not fully based on science, either. Therefore applying the foregoing studies needs to be reinforced and more intensively.In maintaining Liaoning's roads, the traditional maintenance management mode is still used. Usually, this mode depends on the qualitative inspection of the roads and the experiences of individual engineers. Then it is decided which roads to maintain and which technologies to apply.This article will proceed from the actual demand for maintaining the roads of expressways in Liaoning; systematically summarize and conclude the types and reasons of the damages of the asphalt roads; and extensively collect and study the state-of-the-art technologies applied both home and abroad in terms of road maintenance. Then, considering the actual situation of Liaoning's asphalt roads of expressways and in line with the principle of advanced technology and easy accessibility, effective Liaoning-specific maintenance evaluation indexes andmaintaining solutions are put forward. Based on the previous expressway maintaining experiences, evaluation indexes are prioritized and the order of preference of maintaining solutions are made on analytic hierarchy process. This will serve as the guidelines in maintaining asphalt roads of expressways and make the maintenance feasible and doable.By studying and improving the maintenance technology, we will discuss the theories of the technologies that are suitable for Liaoning; in practice, we will develop guidelines for maintaining. Accordingly, road maintenance will be more standardized, scientific and modernized. As a result, road functions and limited years will be improved.
