Power Integrated Circuits (PIC's) have been developed for applications including: power converters, motor controllers, fluorescent lighting ballasts, automotive switching, video amplifiers, bridge circuit drivers, display drivers,etc. To be the key interface between power and electricity, the basic function of PIC is to combine dynamics and information. Furthermore, it is also the main developing direction of SOC (System On a Chip) technology because of the barrier of its actualization.Fluorescent lighting ballasts-to be one of the important branches of the applications of PIC- have symbolized the harmonic combination of the Controlled IC and Power IC within a single chip. Taking into account of the differences in technology and circuit design between the PIC's and normal IC's, a lot of in-depth discussions on the distinguished characters of the PIC's circuit design and device structure will be helpful to China's immature PIC technology.This paper is focused on the circuit design of UBA2014, one of the most matured fluorescent lighting ballast IC's, and fulfills the computer simulation of its internal modules. Design improvements are also presented and verified in order to tape it out in present High Voltage Fab line. Finally, the layout has been plotted and verified by DRC and LVS.
