By using the high accurate data, which include new information available for collision avoidance, it will surely make great contribution to the development and applications of collision avoidance technology nowadays when taking Automatic Identification System (AIS) as the new data source of the Automatic Anti-collision System (AAS). In order to discuss the combination of AIS under the condition of wide usage of AAS, this paper started the study of AIS Based Automatic Anti-collision System (ABAAS).The paper covers mainly the following a.spects of ABAAS technology:(1) Analyzing the advantage of AIS data from that of ARPA, based on the collection and study of research essays published domestically and internationally and the documents of IMO on the AIS technology. Coming up with the consideration of the error of AIS and ARPA data.(2) Identifying the 2 puzzles confusing the study of AAS, which are the reliability of data received from target ship and the communications of the intention of collision avoidance between ships, by analyzing the research of AAS domestically and internationally.(3) Presenting in-depth research and discussion on the solution of the 2 puzzles by taking AIS information as the data-source of AAS.(4) Researching on the acquisition and processing method of basic navigation data from AIS, such as relative course, relative speed, distance, bearing, CPA and TCPA of target ship.(5) Designing the ABAAS (AIS Based Automatic Anti-collision System) collision avoidance scheme and establishing the principle of collision avoidance of own ship and designing the new principle of actions for the collision avoidance using thenews data of AIS according to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions At Sea, 1972, by calculating the risk of collision and consideration of the division of the three kinds of ship encounter.(6) Programming the ABAAS software, including AIS data input simulation program, AIS data processing program, and AIS data display program under the Turbo C 2.1 environment. In practice, ABAAS can accept data from AIS device and calculate the navigation parameter. After that it will calculate the risk of collision and give out the recommended actions of collision avoidance. Experimentation has proved that ABAAS has the advantages such as real-time display, fast responding to risks, easy operation, which make it a promising technology in the study of AAS.
