A vertical structure is one of the important structures in coastal engineering. Wave forces have a great effect on safety and cost of structures. Determination of wave forces on a vertical wall is difficulty owing to violent change of near-shore wave dynamics by topographic and other factors and to subsequent wave breaking. At present, physical model tests are widely employed for determination of wave forces on a vertical wall. However, different researchers have obtained different results. The reason lies in different wave modeling methods as well as analytic methods of wave forces during wave model tests. In this paper, regular wave flume model tests are conducted on a flat-bottom and under different slopes: 1:5, 1:10, 1:15, 1:20, 1:25, respectively. Combined with numerical simulation, characteristics of wave propagation on a slope and a platform and wave forms are discussed, and the maximum wave pressure, acting position and the maximum wave forces are systematically analyzed. Comparison of wave forces on a vertical wall with different slopes is made, and a conversion relation is given. On such a basis, irregular wave model tests under different slopes are also carried out, and a conversion relation between wave forces on a vertical wall of different slopes. Finally, a model for wave forces on a vertical wall is established byuse of neural network techniques and modified BP network. Comparison between the calculated and observed results proves that application of neural network model in calculation of wave force on a vertical wall is favorable.
