Reliable communication is principal for SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) of electric power system, and both sides of communication must comply with the same communication protocol. Now that unifying communication protocol is still a long process, it is imperative to connect the devices with different communication protocols. The main task of this paper is to analyze the mapping among different protocols, work out an efficient and convenient identification and conversion algorithm, and implement them on some software and hardware platform. It is on the basis of the collection and arrangement of prevailing and standard communication protocols. The collected and arranged communication protocols include IEC 870-5, national standard protocols and practical protocols that RTU manufacturers adopt. There are three approaches for protocol conversion: service level conversion approach, protocol level conversion approach and hybrid conversion approach. Service level conversion approach is applicable to SCADA of electric power automation systems.Artificial intelligence methods, especially artificial neural network, have been applied to many fields in recent years. But it seems that no one has applied them in protocol algorithm by now. It is a new attempt of this paper on the background of the hardware's PnP (Plug and Play) and the software's code-reuse. The ANN method is mainly used in identification algorithm. In addition, this paper gives some analysis of communication protocols of electric power system, summarizes some characteristics and some problems in practice of some prevailing protocols, and gives some ways and means to solve them.
