Internationalization helped to bring about the dispersion and the development of the culture, but harmed it at the same time. Under the influence of the global civilization, buildings in different countries looked more and more alike. Regional characteristics and space spirits were neglected. It's necessary to return to think highly of regional characteristics. The sign of a city's architectural culture is its regional architecture. We must acquire a better understanding of our own architectural culture, make a systematic study of our local buildings and their backgrounds. We need to reconsider our design methods to create new designs that embody the spirit of regional culture. Only in this way, can we rationally absorb the pluralistic culture to perfect our regional culture and make it go on with modem life.Since its special climate, history, culture and economy, Xiamen has formed a few kinds of distinctive local building styles. How to make a systematic study of them? How to excavate their regional factors, and then rectify the starting point and the goal of our design to form a feasible design concept? All these are urgent problems.This paper takes up the research in view of all those above-mentioned.It analyses the distinctive local building styles in different historical periods, including their characteristics, backgrounds and the culture they embody. Then it analyses the regional factors of Xiamen, including natural environment and culture.According to that, it talks about the method to design works having Xiamen regional characteristics. Firstly, it puts forward the fundamental design principles from the points of environment, climate, space, culture and function. Secondly, it gives detailed design method, including that from the point of climate and that from the point of culture. Based on the climate, it analysis architectural means to use the favorable factors and avoid the unfavorable factors to create architectural environment being suited to the climate. To make the old and the new culture develop together, it talks about the dialectic method to deal with the relation between them. Finally, it points out that there're still other design angles. The regional culture develops dynamically. We must scan the tradition and the new time critically, make effective judgment and choice.I wish it offer some useful reference in designing regional architecture works in Xiamen.Let's work hard together to create design works having the regional spirit and the time spirit .By our efforts, the essence of the traditional regional architecture can be conserved, and the new regional architecture can develop actively.
