The T type barrier stilling basin has developed to a new energy dissipation technology which is adapted for energy dissipation of underflow in recent years. It was first used in the Bhavani Project in India. To our country, this technology is applied to the Hexi Power Station in Hubei in 70th and the Taoshan Reservoir in Hei Longjiang in 80th. Jilin Province didn't begin to apply it until in 1986. After that, it made much benefit on 5 or 6 projects. Till now, there have already been more than 10 projects taken this new technology. The T type barrier stilling basin is fixed in the flat bottom of stilling basin. It makes the T type barrier and continuous end sill connected. By this method, it can produce forced jump dissipation of energy. As a result, it decreases the length of the stilling basin and lows the cost. However, there are still not enough researches on the energy dissipation characteristics of the T type barrier stilling basin now. Many problems existed still needs further study.Based on the hydraulics series model experiments of the T type barrier stilling basin, the paper gives a full exposition to changing process of the current's flow regime of the T type barrier stilling basin and discloses the flow regime characteristics, the theory of energy dissipation, the shape optimization choice, the method on hydraulic design parameter and programme. What's more, it provides the expression of mathematics and key of the T type barrier stilling basin .The paper also introduced the applied situation of the actual projects about the T type barrier stilling basin through the Helong Reservoir spillway's hydraulic model experiment.
