icult problem that the car appearance is bumped by the either end of a bridge in the highway use in the world. With the development of freeway construction in our country, it is urgent to solve this problem theoretically and practically. For total span length below 100m, the newly-developed integral abutment bridge has excellent solution for the worldwide problem. Through canceling expansion devices and dealing with the embankment fill synthetically, it not only has as lower cost and maintenance fee, but also is more level and smooth.In this paper, the research achievements on jointless bridge in the world has been systematically summed up, then the analyses on the interaction between integral abutment, pile, run-on slabs, the embankment fill and the road pavement of integral abutment bridge been focused , and the design and test of the first integral abutment bridges of China, Si Jiu bridge, been described. At last, some details of the problem and matters needing attention for the design, construction and test have also been provided.This paper would provide theory and experience for further research on integral abutment bridges in our country.
