This paper provides a new method, called planar transformer thermal design method(PTTDM), to design planar transformers. Compared with other design methods of planar transformers, PTTDM begins with the temperature rise of planar transformers. For PTTDM, the temperature rise is the design standard but riot the ^verifying standard. Therefore, this method can guarantee the planar transformer's temperature rise to meet the requirement and shorten the design circle. In order to improve the veracity of PTTDM, it's necessary to correctly calculate the planar transformer's heat sources which include the winding and core losses. This paper uses field methods to calculate the winding loss and the modified Steinmetz experiential equation for core loss calculation. The thermal model of planar transformers plays an important role in PTTDM. The thermal model used in this paper can figure out the temperature rise of the winding and core respectively. This paper also gives an example to illustrate how to establish the thermal model based on experiments and, finally, the application of thermal simulation software is analyzed. At last, a design example is provided to explain the design process of PTTDM and the future work is also presented.
