As the most effective means to increase the economics and reliability of power station, Pumped storage power station with Static Frequency Converter (SFC) for start-up is widely used in developed country. Recently China also implements several pumped storage power station projects. Power harmonics caused by SFC results people concern.This paper investigates harmonics caused by SFC in pumped storage power station through analysis and computer simulation.In chapter one developments of pumped storage power station in the world are investigated, and harmonics suppression method for SFC is surveyed. Working principles of SFC used in pumped storage power station are introduced.In chapter two, harmonic standard is presented. The formulation and inference of Chinese harmonic standard are investigated. Harmonic standard applied to pumped storage power station is discussed. The harmonic standard of 18kV side (SFC) and SOOkV are deduced from principle of design of Chinese harmonic standard.In chapter three six-pulse and twelve-pulse SFC and the relation of control angle and phase-shift angle of the converter are analyzed. Harmonics model of pumped storage power station are established by SABER simulation program. The feasibility of this model is verified through simulation of a project.In chapter four different harmonics elimination methods applied for bulk: pumped storage power station explained. One is application of low harmonic equipment. The other is application of hybrid active power filter.
