Traveling wave revolving ultrasonic motor is the direct driver motor that transforms the electric energy to mechanic energy applying the converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric ceramic and by friction drive. In this paper, a brief review of the progress regarding research on the traveling wave ultrasonic motor and its applications in various fields are presented. In the analysis of the fundamental operation principle, the inherent vibration of the round thin plank, the effect on elliptical motion at stator beam抯 superficial particle and the generation of the traveling wave are discussed. In this paper, the characteristics of piezoelectric ceramic and its basic equations are discussed. And according to the characteristics of piezoelectric ceramic, the superposition theory of linear wave and the structural characteristic of the motor, the piezoelectric ceramic energy transformer used for prototype motor is designed. In this paper, Models of traveling wave revolving ultrasonic motor are lucubrated. On the basis, a method of design for a traveling wave type ultrasonic motor is established. In designing, the performance target aims and valid driver radium is taken for designing requirement and electromechanical conversion efficiency of stator is taken for target function. The dimensions of motor and the recomprcssion added to the rotor are determinated. A two dimension elastic contact model is used for establishing the friction drive between the rotor and the stator of the motor. An electrical equivalent circuit is used to estimate the interaction between the electrical and mechanical parts of the stator. Moreover, A two layer compound beams model is used to determinate the dimension of the projections of the stator. This design method is different from the previous design methods that only accord to the structure of the motor. The proposed method is applied to the design of a prototype motor.
