The solid modeling has been widely used in the field of engineering design. The corresponding theory is becoming more and more mature. The method and technology of oriented object are fire-new one which are used to describe and simulate the practical world. Parasolid is a kind of kernel for solid modeling and it is also a powerful solid modeler. The paper mainly concentrates on exploring 3D solid modeling for hull structure with the oriented object technology, based on Parasolid. Meanwhile,an prototype system has been developed to test the idea. Emphases of the paper are on constructing a reasonable data structure and realizing the basic function of solid modeling such as rotation, zoom, pan and section view .etc.The paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the evolution history of solid modeling and the object of the paper. The second chapter explains the basic concepts of solid modeling and describes the popular researching methods. The third chapter discusses the definitions, model structures, basic operations, and graphical output, etc. in Parasoid. The fourth chapter tells how to build 3D solid model for hull structure applying the oriented object technology, furthermore, the corresponding data structures are presented. The fifth chapter shows the functions of the system, analyzes the mutual relations between all modules and gives several examples. And the last chapter summarizes the whole paper .The prototype system in this paper is developed with MS Visual C++6.0 and OpenGL on Windows NT. The system provided friendly graphical user interface. It has been proved that the system is effective and convenient in modeling hull structure.
